Why is diesel now the same price as unleaded?

Seen a lot places recently where diesel is the same price as unleaded or atleast only 1p difference.
There's always been a 4-5p difference...
Why?

Its a change in taste.
The influx of immigrants and their fancy continental ways is to blame.
Polish/romanians just prefer the taste. Used as a marinade for wild swan.

I paid 66 euros to fill my car up with diesel in France yesterday, usually pay about 66 pounds here in the UK.... a third more expensive, ridiculous!

Successive governments have bust a nut to move us on to diesel, and now we are there they've done an about face... Same old same old.
Just spent two months in France, and average for diesel was about 1.15 € per litre (compared with about 1.18 £ per litre in UK).
So until the recent currency fluctuations ("fluc u Blitish too"), when a Euro and a GBP were pretty much 1:1, the prices were almost identical.
As for diesel price parity with petrol... I confess to being much more cynical on that score...

The industry used to blame the higher diesel price on a lack of UK refinery capacity for diesel.
So they will now come up with another dubious reason for the price parity. Something that will be difficult to disprove and will play on the public's general apathy and habitual trait to pay through the nose for any product that the supplier chooses to set.

UK fuel tax on diesel: 57.95p/l;
Fuel tax on petrol: 57.95p/l.
VAT's the same, too.
It's not so much that we pay MORE, but that our neighbours pay LESS tax on diesel compared to petrol.

Diesel is much cheaper than unleaded in France and Spain. You pay a lot more tax on diesel in UK because the government declared it a polluting fuel...

more important than that gav, is why are sri lankans always working at the stations? their full names don't fit on their badges.
none of this affects cyclists with pumped up tyres who don't want a gingsters.
